Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Every journey starts with a single step

Actions speak louder than words. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. knew that. He used words as eloquently as anyone ever did. But he also knew his words alone weren’t as powerful as words coupled with actions. In 2020, we decided it was time for us to take action. After some initial thought, we took our first step and established Exeter’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program under the direct leadership of one of the company’s chief officers. We weren’t initially sure what it would look like, but we agreed to take careful, deliberate steps and do our best to do it right.

Putting our thoughts into action

Although company leaders initiated our DEI program, they intentionally sought not to conduct its efforts. Rather, they directed that we create an initiative for and by employees. So we initially established a framework that is organized under four pillars – Empowerment, Structure, Environment and Accountability. Each plays a critical role in building and supporting a culture that enables every employee to feel equally engaged, valued, connected and empowered to achieve their full potential. We believe this structure allows us to put intentional focus on developing a culturally competent environment that empowers employees and creates space for all voices to be heard.

Moving Exeter forward

After developing the framework in 2020, our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion program has since begun taking concrete steps forward. These steps include:

  • Incorporating a required goal into all management performance reviews that will support Exeter’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion program through intentional and measurable actions
  • Establishing six Employee Resource Groups to give all team members the ability to connect, learn and speak-out in support of diversity and inclusion
  • Providing DEI training courses for all team members
  • Building more-intentional DEI considerations into our hiring process
  • Observing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s. birthday as an official company holiday
  • Celebrating Diversity Month and hosting a series of monthly, planned events designed to educate and inform one another about the cultures that bind us

What we seek

We don’t expect any of this to be easy. As Dr. King might say, these are not times of comfort and convenience. These are challenging times for all of us, but the challenges are what will make our effort worthwhile. We will persevere and overcome them by working together – raising our collective voices and taking appropriate action to ensure equity and equality for all. Exeter is committed to having a workplace that promotes the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion across every part of our organization. We openly invite our employees, customers, dealers, investors and business partners to join us in our quest.
