Budgeting won’t win any “most fun hobby” awards, but a little planning goes a long way. Grab your numbers and let’s get started.

Simple budget snapshot

Monthly take-home income: $______
Monthly bills and essentials: $______
Monthly savings: $______
Total leftover cash: $______
Your formula: Income - Bills - Debt - Savings = Leftover cash

Think of this as your financial baseline.  That leftover cash is yours to spend, save or put toward a goal, like a vacation, holiday gifts or a bigger emergency fund.

Need a game plan? Pick your style:

  • 50/30/20: 50% of your income goes to needs, 30% to wants and 20% to debt repayment, pretty straightforward, amiright?
  • Pay-yourself-first: Treat your savings like a bill. Set aside money for savings before spending on everything else.
  • Envelope system: Assign a certain amount for each category every month (rent, groceries, gas, etc.) – once that envelope is empty, that’s it on spending.

No matter which approach you choose, the goal is the same: understand where your money is going and make it work harder for you.  Pick a method, try it for a month and adjust as you go. Small steps add up!
